The iconic, the original, the most beloved of them all…. The hero we all looked upto during our childhood – the Man of Steel…. Superman. The iconic hero is back with a bang. The Blue and Red costume with a flowing red cape and the symbol of Hope on his chest , the only thing missing is the red underwear on the outside (And I have no idea if he has worn red on the inside !!). Its 7 years since the last Superman movie and 35 years since the first flick. Superman has come a long way since the 1978 release with Reeve portraying the iconic hero. DC Comics characters have always met with criticism about the flicks made on them. The original Batman series, the declining quality of the Superman series, Green Lantern, Catwoman, etc…..
DC Comics have never reached or attained the success their Marvel counter parts have generated/earned. The main reason being the type of characters in DC; mainly being very dark, secretive, and serious unlike the colourful, jovial and comical nature of the Marvel Universe. Superman & Batman can never be compared to the likes of Iron Man & Spiderman. The original Batman series was a disaster and when Nolan stepped in and created his own version of the Dark Knight, Batman breathed a new lease of life. DC Comics was back in action. Banking on the success of the Batman, DC emerged with another hero – The Green Lantern, hoping similar success and fame for the Green Guy of DC. But it was damn obvious from the trailer of green ringed guy – This wont work !! . Green Lantern disappeared without a trace. Catwoman was made for getting the boot; because there was no need of a spin off on that character and especially not with Halle Berry as the Kitty.
But the most troubled Hero was Superman. He had his good times, then he fell, he returned and yet again he fell….. Superman has come a long way. Starting from his initial days in 1978 to his latest venture in 2013. The original Superman series which started of in 1978, 35 years ago was a smash hit with the audiences and critics alike. Christopher Reeve portrayed Superman in the same. Reeve was praised for his performance. Made on a measly budget of 55 million $, the flick went on to earn 300 million $. The flick had many other big names associated with it – Marlon Brando as Superman’s biological father; Gene Hackman as Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor and Mario Puzo as one of the screenwriters. The flick was shot simultaneously with Superman II. Richard Donner directed the first and he simultaneously shot 75% of the second. But due to some controversy, Donner was taken off from the project and Richard Lester was brought in. He had to shot 51% of the film which included refilming some of the scenes already filmed by Donner in order to get the credit as the director of the flick. The sequel of Superman is still infamous for having two directors. The sequel was released in December 1980 and had two arch-enemies – Lex Luthor & General Zod. The flick was received well by the critics, praising it for its humor and the the role of General Zod.
The third part of the series is where Superman began to stumble… Superman III released in 1983 and was subject to mixed reviews by audiences and mostly negative reviews by the critics. Though they praised Reeve’s role as the corrupted version of Superman. The flick is tagged as an action-comedy due to high slapstick content in the flick. The main reason for that being the antagonist of the flick- Gus Gorman portrayed by a comedian called – Richard Pryor. The third flick was directed wholly by Richard Lester.
Superman crumbled and finally fell flat with the final part in the series – Superman IV : The Quest for Peace. The flick released in 1987 and was directed by one Mr. Sidney J. Furie. The flick was Reeve’s last outing as Superman and after the critical and Box Office disaster of the flick which also stared Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor ; Reeve said the following lines – ” Superman IV was a catastrophe from start to finish. That failure was a huge blow to my career.” Though there were plans for a fifth instalment, it never materialised. Reeve’s involvement in the same ended following his paralysis in 1995. The film was 40th in the List of Worst Films Ever Made (40 out of 50). The series went dormant for 19 years till 2006, when Superman returned. The 2006 outing of Superman titled – Superman Returns was a homage sequel to Superman & Superman II, it ignored the events of the third & fourth instalments. The flick stared Brandon Routh as Superman , Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane & Kevin Spacey as Gene Hackman. The flick tells the story of Superman returning to earth after a 5 year absence. The flick was directed by Bryan Singer on a budget of 205 Million $. The flick went on to earn only 391 Million $. Though Warner Bros were disappointed, the flick was highly praised by critics, some even praising it as the one of the Best Superhero Movies ever made (I wonder if he would say the same after Nolan released his version of the Batman). Nolan was impressed by Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns because of its connection with original Donner’s Superman.Superman disappeared once again without a trace and Routh still clamouring to do the sequel.According to me Routh was the worst choice for portraying the iconic hero. The reason he was chosen to play the same was due to his resemblance to Reeve.
Finally the DC guys & the Warner Bros guys came to their senses, when they announced the reboot of the Superman series. David S Goyer & Nolan were approached to write the story of the flick, with Nolan to be the producer too. Many A listers were approached to direct the reboot which was finally given to Zack Snyder… The list of potential directors included – Guillermo del Toro, Robert Zemeckis ,Ben Affleck, Darren Aronofsky, Duncan Jones, Jonathan Liebesman, Matt Reeves and Tony Scott. The reboot titled – Man of Steel has Henry Cavill , known for his role in the flick – Immortals cast as Superman. He built and worked on his body gaining a lot of weig ht for fitting the role perfectly. Amy Adams was cast as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El; Superman’s biological father, Kevin Costner & Diane Lane as his foster parents. Michael Shannon portrays Superman’s arch nemesis from his home planet Krypton – General Zod.
The flick released on June 14th 2013 to very postive response from the audience with the reboot earning about 195 Million $ worldwide in two days. The critical response has been somewhat mixed, mentioning the presence of excessive action in the flick. The principal cast of the flick have been praised for their acting, especially Cavill , Shannon & Adams. The flick is heading out to be the opening to a DC Cinematic Universe, with a sequel and a potential Justice League flick in tow.
One can say that Nolan has brought forward a new outlook to the world and characters of DC Comics. So please keep your fingers crossed and pray that the Justice League and further sequels happen soon 🙂
Go Watch Man of Steel in the theatres , and try watching it in 2D.
